The author has compiled a series of "Outside the Window" photographs over thirteen years, sitting in front of the window observing the life, aging, sickness, and death on a ping pong table.. He grew up in Hong Kong's public housing estates, which are typically seven floor buildings designed to provide basic housing, not luxurious living conditions. The design includes a corridor (veranda) leading from the kitchen to the toilet, which, besides being a passageway, is also used for storage and drying clothes. In the era without air conditioning, it served as a ventilation channel, but in winter, it became the culprit for letting in the cold wind. Residents would use this space in various ways. Particularly in this generation of public housing, some units are located on the ground floor, with iron railings on the veranda, allowing people on the street to peek into the room from the horizontal line.
"The Ground Floor / Horizontal Line" is a photography project, a response to Hong Kong's housing, exploring how to use and understand space. Space is not only a physical existence but also a place where we live, work, and create. It is a container for our memories, experiences, and identities.
We don't need to step into other people's private spaces. In "The Ground Floor / Horizontal Line", we can also explore the 'grassroots' designs of Hong Kong people, how they view privacy, and how they construct their unique spaces in this borrowed space.
